Employee Megan Mercer

Here at Inszone, one of our missions is to make sure that every employee is appreciated, acknowledged, and recognized for their achievements. This Employee Spotlight series aims to celebrate success and highlight the talented individuals we have at Inszone, Cover Cannabis, and California Pool Association. Each month we’ll be featuring Inszone employees on our website, blog and social accounts.

Please join us in congratulating Megan Mercer, our Employee Spotlight for the month of April!

Megan Mercer, a Commercial Sales Team Manager, began her career in the insurance industry shortly after college, starting as a temporary employee at Farmers Insurance’s corporate office in Overland Park, Kansas. What began as a short-term opportunity quickly evolved into a long-term career, as she transitioned into permanent roles across multiple departments. Through her journey, Megan developed a deep understanding of the industry and discovered a passion for the work, building a well-rounded foundation that continues to shape her success today.

With experience spanning customer service, corporate training, claims, and sales, Megan brings a comprehensive and balanced perspective to her role. She values clarity, consistency, and setting clear expectations—principles that guide how she collaborates with her team and approaches daily operations. Known for her high energy and positive attitude, Megan fosters an engaging and supportive work environment, often using humor to keep morale high and strengthen team connections.

Megan credits her strong work ethic and values to her parents, whose dedication as small business owners and active community members left a lasting impression on her. Throughout her career, she has embraced challenges as opportunities for growth, learning the importance of perspective, resilience, and maintaining strong support systems. Outside of work, Megan enjoys spending time with her family, performing improv comedy, and giving back to her community through volunteer work and local events—efforts that recently earned her recognition as Volunteer of the Year from the Lee’s Summit Chamber.

When asked to share a few words about Megan, her direct supervisor, Jennifer Turner, Vice President of Missouri, shared the following:

“One of my first interactions with Megan took place when she was still a competitor insurance agent. It didn’t happen over a client or policy. We were dragging trash bags down a stretch of ditch on a very hot day. She showed up to volunteer for the nasty job of Rotary highway cleanup. On that day, I learned Megan was positive, smart, motivated, ethical, funny and a connector. A dismal project turned into a day of great insurance conversations and laughter. I met a kindred thinker who I soon valued as a member of my center of influence.

A few years passed and the time came to find the right producer to take over my prior commercial clients. There was no question, I wanted Megan. Inszone was the right company culture for her energy.  In every aspect of sales and service leadership she rolls up her sleeves, leads by example, and gets the job done. She has a knack for finding the positive and spreading joy in difficult or mundane situations.   You never know when you might meet a valuable connection, neither of us expected a day cleaning a ditch to be so rewarding. Rising from a producer to manager of an Inszone Commercial Sales Team, Megan has become a major center of Influence for the MO and KS territory. Passionate about both insurance coaching and humor, we are blessed to have Megan as an inspiring, kind, and driven leader.”

Q: What initially brought you to the insurance industry?

A: I started as a temp at Farmers Insurance corporate office in Overland Park, KS,  directly after college. The temp position became permanent, and I was able to move into various roles throughout my career, helping to shape my understanding of the industry.

Q: In what ways do you think your unique background or experiences contribute to your success in your role?

A: Having worked in a variety of departments—including customer service, corporate training, claims, and sales—I bring a well rounded, comprehensive perspective of the industry. My experience in training strengthened my understanding of the policy and coverage. My time in claims gave me a clear view of the processes that restore customers after a loss. And my work in sales provided valuable insight into how underwriting evaluates and prices risk.

Q: Can you share a particularly challenging situation you faced in your career and how you overcame it?

A: With nearly 24 years in the industry, I’ve certainly faced my share of challenging situations. What I’ve learned is that it’s incredibly important to have people you trust—those sounding boards who help you step back and see the bigger picture. Sometimes a situation isn’t what it appears to be at first, and giving yourself space to move past that initial emotional reaction can make all the difference in understanding it clearly.
Every challenge I’ve faced has shaped me and helped me grow. I’m grateful for the harsher agency environments I’ve experienced in my career, because they gave me the perspective to genuinely appreciate a positive and supportive workplace. And I’m grateful for the tough conversations—the ones that tested me—because they also revealed my strength, my resilience, and my ability to handle difficult moments with dignity.

Q: If you could describe your approach to teamwork in three words, what would they be and why?

A: Clarity, Consistency, and Expectations. These words came up in a Town Hall earlier this year, and they’ve stayed with me guiding how I work with my team and review processes. Clarity helps make sure everyone knows what we’re doing and why. Consistency builds trust—people know what to expect and how we operate day to day. And setting Expectations keeps us all aligned and moving in the same direction. Those three ideas shape how I show up as a teammate.

Q: What do you think sets you apart, and how does it benefit your team?

A: I think what sets me apart is my high energy and positivity. I like to infuse my sense of humor, when it fits, to turn conversations that might feel routine or tedious into something a little more fun and engaging. I genuinely like keeping my coworkers’ spirits up. Sometimes we kick off our Fridays with a “song of the day”—just a small boost of energy to get everyone smiling and laughing as we start the morning.

Q: Who has been the biggest influence or mentor in your life, and what valuable lessons have you learned from them?

A: My parents are my biggest inspiration. They worked hard, made time for family, and were always involved in their community through organizations like The Elks Lodge, VFA, VVA, and our local parish. As small business owners running Comet Cleaners in San Angelo, Texas, they were often the first ones in, the last ones out, and the ones working when everyone else had the day off. They showed me that hard work truly does pay off. They taught me to take pride in what I do, stay humble, and—maybe most importantly—keep a good sense of humor along the way.

Q: What accomplishment are you most proud of in your career so far, and what did it teach you?

A: Last year, I was honored to receive the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Lee’s Summit Chamber for my work with the organization: serving on the Oktoberfest committee, planning and emceeing the Women in Business Conference, presenting to the Young Professionals Group, and leading a workshop for the Recess for Success session called Funny Business, where I shared how improv can boost your “business physique.”
I love being involved in the Lee’s Summit community. Getting to help with events that bring people together, support local businesses, and highlight our downtown is something that brings me a lot of joy and makes me feel connected. Being recognized by the people I volunteer alongside was incredibly surprising and genuinely humbling.

Q: What are some hobbies you do outside of work that you enjoy?

A: I love spending time with my family. My husband, Curtis, my 15-year-old son, Liam, and I enjoy watching movies together, playing games, and traveling.
I also love performing improv. I’ve been performing since college and have been a member of several troupes in KC. Currently, I’m a member of Tantrum who performs locally for Gilda’s House every year on Gilda Radner’s birthday. We also put on a March 32nd show every year (April Fools Day comedy show) as a fundraiser for One Good Meal, a non-profit bringing meals to the homebound and elderly. I’m also a founding member of an improv comedy group called Pretty. Funny. We have been performing together for almost 20 years. Improv uses suggestions from the audience for scenes and games. It’s a fast-paced show with wit and physical comedy. I also volunteer my time to Emcee for galas for local nonprofits.

Megan, your hard work, leadership, and positive spirit make a lasting impact on your team and the entire company. We’re grateful for all you do and are proud to celebrate you this month!
